Radiation kills cancerous cells. But at the same time, radiation damages the healthy cells also, near the treatment area of the body. This causes side effects. Some side effects may come many months after the radiation therapy.
Radiation treatment for cancer has the following side effects. It is not necessary that any or all of these side effects will take place:-
- Fatigue – There may be a general feeling of tiredness. The patient may feel exhausted all the time. The degree of fatigue depends on the dose of radiation being delivered as per the treatment plan. If chemotherapy is also being given along with radiation therapy then the degree of fatigue will be higher. Fatigue affects your mood and emotions. It also affects daily activities and relationships with family members. It has a negative effect on your job performance also.
- Pain – A patient undergoing radiation therapy may experience pain. It may be exhausting and may cause stress.
- Stomach & Abdomen – Side effects may include nausea & vomiting, loss of appetite, and upset stomach.
- Pelvis Area – If radiation is directed on the pelvis area side effects may include rectal bleeding, bladder irritation, changes in menstruation, fertility problem, and sexual problems.
- Chest Area – Some of the side effects are shortness of breath, cough & fever, stiffness in shoulder, tenderness in breast, soreness in breast and difficulty in swallowing.
- Head & Neck Area – Headache, blurred vision, nausea, hair loss, tooth decay, difficulty in swallowing, skin changes, taste changes, stiffness in the jaw and mouth & gum sore.
