What are Head and Neck Cancers?
Head and Neck Cancers usually begin in the cells that line the mucous surfaces inside the head and neck. It may occur inside the mouth, throat, and nasal cavity also. This type of cancer can also begin in the salivary glands. The malignant tumor can develop in or around the nose, mouth, sinuses, throat, and larynx.
Following are not included under Head and Neck Cancers:-
- Cancers of the brain, eye, esophagus, muscles, and bone of the head, thyroid glands, scalp, and skin
Alcohol and tobacco are two main causes of head and neck cancers. 75% of head and neck cancers are caused by the use of alcohol and tobacco.
Following are symptoms of head and neck cancers:-
- Lump or sore which does not heal
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Hoarseness of voice
- White or red patch on tongue and gum
- Trouble in breathing, speaking, and swallowing
- Pain in the neck, ear, or throat that does not go away
- Chronic sinus infection and bleeding through the nose
- Swelling under the chin and around jawbones
- Numbness or paralysis of face muscles
