What is Breast Conservation Surgery
Breast conservation surgery is an operation in which cancerous tissues and tumor is removed. Some of the surrounding healthy tissues are also removed. If decided by the oncologist, some lymph nodes may also be removed. But care is taken not to remove the complete breast.
It is essential to understand the construction of the breast. The female breast is made up of lobes and ducts. Sections of the breast are called lobes. There are 15 to 20 such lobes. Each lobe has further many sections. These are named lobules. These lobules are connected to very small bulbs. These bulbs can make milk.
In addition, the female breast has blood vessels and lymph vessels. The lymph vessels carry lymph to lymph nodes under the armpit.
Ductal carcinoma (DCIS) is one type of cancer in the breast that is more common. Surgery is one of the options for cancer treatment. In breast conservation surgery care is taken to remove only the cancerous part and not the whole breast. Part of chest wall lining may also be removed. In a total mastectomy, the complete breast is removed, which has cancer in it.
